Taking place over ten days, the festival is a chance to celebrate language and writing. Martin Levinson and Avril Silk (the writing team behind two of our plays – Beyond Expectations and The Ghosts of Mr. Dickens) were invited to speak about their work and kindly invited us to share in the event.
At sunset, in the Great Hall, we gathered together with other festival goers. Martin and Avril gave a thoughtful, entertaining talk – entitled ‘What the Dickens’ – about their experiences writing and researching plays about Charles Dickens. They spoke about finding their own ‘dickensness’, writing new scenes and adapting existing text.
Five actors from Untold Theatre performed rehearsed readings of scenes from the plays – some reprising old roles, others working with the text for the first time. Some actors were also there in spirit, in the form of video clips from past performances.
The festival was a wonderful chance to share our work with new audiences, answer questions and reflect upon our past endeavours.
An inspiring atmosphere, perfect weather and the beautiful architecture of Dartington Hall made this an evening we won’t forget in a hurry.
